The High Atlas is close to Marrakech and worlds away in mood. Here is a guide to visiting these mountains.
The High Atlas at a glance
The High Atlas runs across central Morocco and includes Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa. Its valleys hold walnut groves, terraced fields and Amazigh (Berber) villages.
Places to know
- Imlil: the trailhead village for Toubkal and many valley walks.
- Ourika Valley: a popular escape from Marrakech.
- Tizi n'Tichka: the high pass on the road to Ouarzazate and the desert.
When to go
Late spring to autumn is best for walking. Winter brings snow and cold at altitude, which can be beautiful but limits some routes.
Walking and adventure
Options run from gentle village walks to multi-day treks. A local guide adds route knowledge, safety and access to village life.
Combine it with the desert
Crossing the Atlas is the first part of the road from Marrakech to the Sahara, so many travelers combine mountain scenery with a desert journey.
