Essaouira Travel Guide: Medina, Port & Beaches

What to see, eat and do in Essaouira, the breezy Atlantic port with a UNESCO-listed medina.

By TOUROCCO TeamPublished 1 min read

Essaouira is a whitewashed Atlantic port with blue fishing boats, sea ramparts and a creative, relaxed spirit. It is one of Morocco's easiest places to slow down.

Why visit

The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, compact enough to explore on foot, and the coastal air is a welcome change after Marrakech or the desert.

What to do

  • Walk the ramparts, including the Skala de la Ville sea bastion.
  • Watch the fishing boats in the port and eat grilled fish nearby.
  • Browse woodworking shops and art galleries in the medina.
  • Walk or play on the long beach; the steady winds attract wind and kite sports.

Getting there

Essaouira is roughly three hours by road from Marrakech, so it works as a day trip or, better, an overnight stop.

When to go

The coast is mild year-round, and summer is cooler than inland Morocco, though windy. Autumn and spring are lovely.

Add it to your trip

Essaouira pairs naturally with Marrakech or a longer journey. Tell us if you would like it included in a private itinerary.
