Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1: Marrakech → Imlil & the Toubkal Valley

A short drive into the High Atlas reaches Imlil, the trailhead village for Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak (4,167m). A gentle walk through walnut groves and stone-built Berber villages such as Aroumd offers a taste of mountain life.

    Imlil (guesthouse)

  2. 2

Day 2: Imlil → Ait Benhaddou → Boumalne Dades

Descending from Imlil, the route rejoins the Tizi n'Tichka road, visiting the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou kasbah and Ouarzazate before continuing into the Dades Valley for the overnight.

    Boumalne Dades (kasbah guesthouse)

  3. 3

Day 3: Boumalne Dades → Merzouga

The morning begins with a drive through the dramatic Dades Gorges and the "Monkey Fingers" rock formations, then the towering Todra Gorge for an optional walk. The route crosses Erfoud and Rissani before the first golden crests of the Erg Chebbi dunes appear. Late afternoon, a camel trek carries you into the dunes to a desert camp, with dinner under the stars and Gnawa music.

  4. 4

Day 4: Full Day in Merzouga

A relaxed day based in Merzouga allows time to visit Khamlia, a village founded by descendants of sub-Saharan slaves and famous for its Gnawa music, and to explore the Erg Chebbi dunes on foot, by sandboard, or by quad bike, before a second night at the desert camp.

  5. 5

    Day 5: Merzouga → Fes

Heading north from the dunes, the route follows the spectacular Ziz Valley Gorges before climbing onto the Middle Atlas plateau, via Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco," and the Azrou Cedar Forest with its wild Barbary macaques, concluding in Fes.

    Fes (riad)

  6. 6

Day 6: Full Day in Fes

A full day exploring Fes el-Bali, the largest car-free urban area on Earth: the ornate Bab Boujloud gate, the Al Quaraouiyine mosque-university (founded in 859), the iconic Chouara leather tanneries, and the restored Nejjarine Fondouk.

    Fes (riad)

  7. 7

    Day 7: Meknes & Volubilis

A stop in Meknes reveals the monumental Bab Mansour gate and vast royal stables built under Sultan Moulay Ismail. Just outside town, the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis and the hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun add historical depth.

    Meknes (hotel)

  8. 8

    Day 8: Meknes → Chefchaouen

Climbing into the Rif Mountains, the route reaches Chefchaouen, the famous "Blue Pearl" of Morocco, in time to wander its cobalt-blue lanes at sunset.

    Chefchaouen (riad)

  9. 9

    Day 9: Chefchaouen → Rabat → Casablanca

The road south can pass through Ouezzane and the elegant capital Rabat, home to the unfinished Hassan Tower and the whitewashed Kasbah of the Udayas, before reaching Casablanca and the vast Hassan II Mosque.

    Casablanca (hotel)

  10. 10

    Day 10: Casablanca → Essaouira

A relaxed coastal drive from Casablanca reaches Essaouira by afternoon, with the rest of the day free to explore the medina and port.

    Essaouira (riad)

  11. 11

Day 11: Essaouira → Taroudant (via Agadir)

A full morning to explore the breezy fishing port immortalised by Orson Welles and Jimi Hendrix — the 18th-century Skala ramparts, the fishing port, and thuya-wood marquetry workshops — before continuing south via Agadir to Taroudant, a walled city nicknamed "Little Marrakech" for its red pisé ramparts.

    Taroudant (riad)

  12. 12

    Day 12: Taroudant → Marrakech

The route back to Marrakech winds through argan forests unique to southwestern Morocco, with the option to stop at a women-run argan oil cooperative, before crossing the Atlas foothills back to the Red City.
