Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1: Marrakech → Boumalne Dades

Leaving Marrakech behind, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains and crosses the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka Pass. A stop at the crumbling Telouet Kasbah and a short detour to the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou precede lunch in Ouarzazate, then the Skoura palm oasis and Valley of Roses before reaching Boumalne Dades.

  2. 2

Day 2: Boumalne Dades → Merzouga

The morning begins with a drive through the dramatic Dades Gorges and the "Monkey Fingers" rock formations, then the towering Todra Gorge for an optional walk. The route crosses Erfoud and Rissani before the first golden crests of the Erg Chebbi dunes appear. Late afternoon, a camel trek carries you into the dunes to a desert camp, with dinner under the stars and Gnawa music.

    Day 3: Merzouga → Fes

Heading north from the dunes, the route follows the spectacular Ziz Valley Gorges before climbing onto the Middle Atlas plateau, via Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco," and the Azrou Cedar Forest with its wild Barbary macaques, concluding in Fes.

    Fes (riad)

  4. 4

Day 4: Full Day in Fes

A full day exploring Fes el-Bali, the largest car-free urban area on Earth: the ornate Bab Boujloud gate, the Al Quaraouiyine mosque-university (founded in 859), the iconic Chouara leather tanneries, and the restored Nejjarine Fondouk.

    Fes (riad)

  5. 5

    Day 5: Meknes & Volubilis

A stop in Meknes reveals the monumental Bab Mansour gate and vast royal stables built under Sultan Moulay Ismail. Just outside town, the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis and the hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun add historical depth.

    Meknes (hotel)

  6. 6

    Day 6: Meknes → Chefchaouen

Climbing into the Rif Mountains, the route reaches Chefchaouen, the famous "Blue Pearl" of Morocco, in time to wander its cobalt-blue lanes at sunset.

    Chefchaouen (riad)

  7. 7

    Day 7: Chefchaouen → Rabat

The road south can pass through Ouezzane and the elegant capital Rabat, home to the unfinished Hassan Tower and the whitewashed Kasbah of the Udayas.

    Rabat (hotel)

  8. 8

    Day 8: Rabat → Casablanca

A morning in Rabat's imperial quarter precedes the drive to Casablanca to see the Hassan II Mosque and the Corniche.

    Casablanca (hotel)

  9. 9

    Day 9: Casablanca → Marrakech → Essaouira

A comfortable drive returns you to Marrakech, then continues west to Essaouira, the laid-back UNESCO-listed port city known for its fortified ramparts, blue fishing boats, and Gnaoua music heritage.

    Essaouira (riad)

  10. 10

Day 10: Full Day in Essaouira

A full day to explore the breezy fishing port immortalised by Orson Welles and Jimi Hendrix: walking the 18th-century Skala ramparts, watching the daily catch at the port, browsing thuya-wood marquetry workshops, and relaxing on the wide Atlantic beach.
