Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1: Marrakech → Boumalne Dades

Leaving Marrakech behind, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains and crosses the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka Pass. A stop at the crumbling Telouet Kasbah reveals the faded grandeur of the Glaoui dynasty, while a short detour to Ait Benhaddou — the UNESCO-listed fortified village — is a highlight for photography lovers. After lunch in Ouarzazate, the route continues along the Skoura palm oasis and through the Valley of Roses before reaching Boumalne Dades.

  2. 2

Day 2: Boumalne Dades → Merzouga

The morning begins with a drive through the dramatic Dades Gorges and the famous "Monkey Fingers" rock formations, before continuing to the towering Todra Gorge for an optional short walk. The route crosses the fossil-rich town of Erfoud and Rissani before the first golden crests of the Erg Chebbi dunes appear. Late afternoon, a camel trek carries you deep into the dunes to a desert camp, with dinner under the stars and traditional Gnawa music.

  3. 3

    Day 3: Merzouga → Fes

Heading north from the dunes, the route follows the spectacular Ziz Valley Gorges before climbing onto the Middle Atlas plateau. A stop in Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco," and the Azrou Cedar Forest with its wild Barbary macaques precede arrival in Fes, Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital.

    Fes (riad)

  4. 4

Day 4: Full Day in Fes

A full day exploring Fes el-Bali, the largest car-free urban area on Earth: the ornate Bab Boujloud gate, the Al Quaraouiyine mosque-university (founded in 859), the iconic Chouara leather tanneries, and the restored Nejjarine Fondouk, before browsing the souks.

    Fes (riad)

  5. 5

    Day 5: Meknes & Volubilis

A stop in Meknes, one of Morocco's four Imperial Cities, reveals the monumental Bab Mansour gate and vast 17th-century royal stables built under Sultan Moulay Ismail. Just outside town, the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis and the sacred hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun add historical depth.

    Meknes (hotel)

  6. 6

    Day 6: Meknes → Chefchaouen

Climbing into the Rif Mountains, the route reaches Chefchaouen, the famous "Blue Pearl" of Morocco, in time to wander its cobalt-blue lanes at sunset.

    Chefchaouen (riad)

  7. 7

    Day 7: Chefchaouen → Rabat

The road south can pass through Ouezzane and the elegant capital Rabat, home to the unfinished Hassan Tower and the whitewashed Kasbah of the Udayas.

    Rabat (hotel)

  8. 8

    Day 8: Rabat → Casablanca

A relaxed morning in Rabat precedes the short drive to Casablanca for an afternoon at the Hassan II Mosque and the seafront Corniche.

    Casablanca (hotel)

  9. 9

    Day 9: Casablanca → Marrakech

A comfortable final drive south across the plains returns you to Marrakech, where the trip concludes back in the buzz of Jemaa el-Fnaa square.
