Morocco is welcoming and easy to enjoy with a little preparation. These tips cover the questions first-time visitors ask most.
Before you go
Entry requirements depend on your nationality. Check the official government guidance for your passport before you book, and make sure your passport has enough validity for your trip.
Money
- The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD).
- ATMs are common in cities and towns; carry cash for small villages, snacks and tips.
- Cards are accepted in many hotels and larger restaurants, but not everywhere.
Tipping and bargaining
Small tips are customary for guides, drivers and restaurant staff. In the souks, prices are often negotiable; keep it friendly, and don't start bargaining unless you are genuinely interested in buying.
Dress and etiquette
Modest, comfortable clothing is appropriate in most places and helps you feel at ease in medinas and villages. Ask before photographing people, and be respectful around mosques and religious sites.
Food and water
- Bottled water is widely available and recommended.
- Try tagines, couscous and fresh salads. Vegetarian meals are easy to find.
- Mint tea is offered as a gesture of hospitality; accepting is part of the experience.
