Marrakech to Sahara Desert: Route, Timing & Tips

How the journey from Marrakech to the Sahara works: routes, timing, where to go and how many days you need.

By TOUROCCO TeamPublished 2 min read

The road from Marrakech to the Sahara crosses the High Atlas and descends into a landscape of kasbahs, palm valleys and open desert. Here is how to plan it.

The classic route

Most journeys head south-east from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas, then descend toward Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. From there, routes continue through the palm-filled valleys and gorges of the south before reaching the dunes.

This is a general description of a common route rather than a fixed itinerary; private trips can vary the stops to suit you.

Merzouga or Chigaga?

Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is the most accessible dune field, with tall, dramatic ridges. Erg Chigaga is farther, more remote and generally quieter, and suits travelers who want more seclusion and don't mind extra distance.

  • Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): easier access, larger tourism infrastructure.
  • Chigaga (Erg Chigaga): wilder, quieter, longer approach.

How many days?

The drive is long, so three days is the practical minimum for a round trip and allows a night in the desert. Four days feels more relaxed, with more time to stop along the way. If you would like to see more of Morocco as well, a longer itinerary combines the desert with other regions.

Why go private?

The distances and stops are the heart of this journey. A private trip means you can pause for photographs, choose where to eat and set your own pace instead of following a fixed group schedule.

Practical tips

  • Pack layers: desert nights are cold much of the year.
  • Carry a scarf for sun and sand, and sunglasses.
  • Bring cash in Moroccan dirhams for small purchases along the way.
  • Travel between October and April for the most comfortable desert temperatures.
