Morocco Travel Tips

How Many Days Do You Need in Morocco?

From a three-day Sahara escape to a twelve-day discovery, how much time each kind of trip really needs.

Morocco is bigger than it looks on a map, and roads through the mountains take time. The right trip length depends on how much you want to see and how fast you like to travel.

Distances to keep in mind

Journeys between regions are long. As a rough guide, Marrakech to Essaouira is around three hours by road, Marrakech to Fes is a long day, and Marrakech to Merzouga at the edge of the Sahara takes most of a day, often broken by stops in the Atlas and the valleys beyond.

Building in stops rather than trying to cover everything in one go is what separates a rushed trip from an enjoyable one.

3 to 4 days: the Sahara escape

With three or four days, focus on one region. A private journey from Marrakech to the Sahara is the classic choice, giving you the desert without a long itinerary.

7 days: a first taste of Morocco

A week lets you combine two or three areas, for example a city, the mountains and some time in the south. You will be moving most days, so choose carefully.

8 to 10 days: the comfortable middle

Eight to ten days is a comfortable length for many travelers: enough to include the Sahara, one or two imperial cities and a stretch of coast or mountains without constant packing and unpacking.

10 to 12 days and beyond: going deeper

With ten to twelve days you can slow down, add rest days and include places beyond the main circuit. This is the best length for travelers who want to see Morocco's variety and still have time to enjoy it.

How to decide

  • Decide your must-sees first (desert, cities, mountains, coast).
  • Count the driving days, not just the nights.
  • Add a buffer day if you are travelling in summer or winter.
